The firearms world has always been male-dominated, but times are changing, and more women are getting into guns. At first, it can feel like all the gun things only cater to men. So, what’s a girl to do when she wants to keep femininity but still protect herself?

The obvious answer seems to be: “Buy a pink gun!” But many women aren’t into that. I like pink sparingly and have never considered buying a pink gun. Still, my style is important to me, and I have never wanted to change it just because I like guns.

Concealed Carry

My Instagram account started as a place to teach women how to carry concealed while maintaining their style. Although I’ve expanded my reach, it’s still a significant theme in my posts. I remember feeling accomplished when I figured out how to conceal in my favorite outfits, and I want other women to feel that, too.

You don’t have to start dressing tactical the minute you carry a gun. In fact, you’re far less likely to be outed if you maintain your usual style. The trick here is that concealed carry takes practice, like anything else. Keep at it; eventually, you will stop feeling like you must dress around your gun.

Holsters

Speaking of concealed carry, have you noticed the massive number of holsters on the market now? You can pick one up in almost any color you desire, from basic black to carbon fiber to safety orange and everything in between.

What’s even better are the print and pattern options: camouflage, florals, abstract prints, popular culture references, and more. I’ve even seen a holster that looks like a taco inside and out.

Companies like QVO Tactical, which offers over 150 choices of colors and patterns, are quite literally making something for everyone. I have their “More Discreet” IWB holster from QVO Tactical, which has a canvas fabric wrap for comfort and style. I chose their “Hawaiian Floral” pattern because bold and bright designs make me happy.

Range Gear

When I started shooting, everything available was draped in tactical neutrals or hunting camouflage. I love olive drab, but I’m also glad to see other options being sold. You can find stylish, feminine range gear like bags, eye and ear pro, and even tool kits.

Rugged Rare, which runs Cameleon Bags, makes all kinds of fashion-forward concealed carry bags, including range bags. I have used their Aurora Backpack for years, and it’s held up beautifully. It’s set up for off-body carry, but I always use it as a range bag for quick trips.

Barrels, Backstraps, Slides, and More

These days, you can swap many pistol parts for performance and aesthetic purposes. Slides, barrels, backstraps, magazine release buttons, mag wells, and the list goes on. Changing parts can take your dull, basic black gun and give it a little style.

I carry Glocks, which are known to be the Honda Civics of the gun world. And I’m not ashamed to say several of my swaps have been for looks. Of course, I’ve chosen equally working or upgraded options with a nicer aesthetic.

When I added a red dot to my Glock 43, I opted for a cooler-looking slide instead of having mine milled. I also have a thing for gold barrels and have switched those in my Glock 43 and Glock 48 MOS. Most recently, I added a gold brass backstrap to my Walther PDP-F, and while it does provide a little more weight for recoil management, I just can’t get enough of how it looks.

Cerakote

Maybe you’re not into pink pistols, but you would really dig something in blue or green. In that case, Cerakote may be a good option for you. Plus, it’s a way to customize a gun you already love instead of buying something just for looks.

Cerakote is a ceramic and polymer coating that can be applied to achieve a specific look, but it also has a practical purpose. It’s very thin, at only 0.001 inches thick, and adds a layer of protection and durability.

The coating comes in hundreds of colors, and a professional can apply it in patterns and designs as well. As this trend continues to grow, it’s moving beyond solid colors and camouflage. It’s one of the few ways to have a truly custom, one-of-a-kind-looking firearm if you’re into that sort of thing.

Conclusion

If you’re a woman who’s interested in getting into guns, don’t worry that you’ll have to turn into Tactical Tammy. The days of compromising are over. You can easily combine your love of guns with your personal style.
