Building on the company's popular Model 24 combo gun that was first introduced when FDR was in the White House, the more modern Model 42 debuted in 2013 and was soon offered in a quick takedown model. Offered either in a .22 LR over .410 or a .22 WMR over .410, the 42 Takedown only came in a very basic black-on-black color.
That's changed as Savage this month announced that the combo gun will be offered in both Flat Dark Earth and Olive Drab Green variants, each with both traditional caliber options (.22LR/.410 and .22WMR/.410), adding four new SKUs to the company's catalog.
The break-action combo fires rimfire rounds from the top barrel and .410 bore shotgun shells from the bottom. Barrel length is 20 inches and includes a removable rear sight on the top barrel to allow optic mounting. (Photos: Savage)
The Model 42's length of pull is short enough and its recoil light enough to make a perfect starter gun for young shooters.
The barrels are matte black, while the synthetic stock is weatherproof. As with the rest of the 42 Takedown rimfire-shotgun combos, the new models break down with the push of one button and ship with a carry bag.
"The updated Model 42 Takedown is a game changer, now available in two classic colorways," said Savage Arms’s Rimfire Product Manager Brett McKenna. "With its combination rifle/shotgun design, simple break action, and adjustable rifle sights, it offers unparalleled convenience and performance for a wide range of applications."
The MSRP across all four new models of the Savage 42 Takedown is set at $579.
