In a somewhat explosive move that flew largely under the radar last week, the U.S. Army officially awarded FN America a Prototype Project Opportunity Notice valued at $2 million for the development of its MTL-30 grenade launcher.

The semi-automatic Multi-Purpose Tactical Launcher is designed to fire 30mm projectiles with medium velocity at a flat trajectory out to 500 meters. The portable shoulder-fired system feeds from three- or five-round detachable box magazines.

Here are some basic specs for the new grenadier weapon:

Caliber: 30mm, medium velocity
Magazine Capacity: 3 or 5 rounds, detachable box magazine
Operation: Semi-automatic
Weight: 11 pounds (launcher only)
Overall Length: 34 inches
Effective Range: 500 meters

“This program is a U.S. government priority with the shift in modern warfare and engagements, and FN is honored to be selected to develop this new, innovative solution,” said Mark Cherpes, president and CEO for FN America, LLC. “Once developed and implemented, this weapon system could radically change future battlefield strategies. It will offer new capabilities at the squad level and upgraded tactical options, giving the warfighter a more effective system.”

Manufactured by FN America out of its South Carolina plant, the FN MTL-30’s upper receiver hosts Mil-Std 1913 Picatinny and M-LOK for optics and accessories. It features a non-reciprocating, ambidextrous charging handle along with a proprietary recoil-mitigation systems. The barrel can host multiple muzzle devices, including suppressor options.

As part of the future-looking Precision Grenadier System for the force, the U.S. Army is seeking to improve upon its legacy M203/M320 single-shot grenade launchers with a more nimble, multi-threat, soldier-portable solution. Ammunition options could conceivably cover various land-based and aerial threat types, such as drones.

“The FN MTL-30 shoulder-fired launcher can engage in close-quarter warfare, defeat targets in defilade, and engage unmanned aerial systems. It could also be networked with FN remote weapon stations to create a multi-layered defense against UAS,” said John Bungard, senior director, Military Development Programs for FN America. “Providing solutions that can counter multiple threats is critical for future battlefield engagements. We are excited that the Army is interested in maturing our PGS solution. We are fully committed to this system and its development.”
