This Colt Police Positive Seely Night Sight is in great shape overall considering its age. The flashlight does not work, but that is likely due to a dead battery. Guns.com when acquiring this firearm did not take it apart so we are not certain whether it is the flashlight or something else. There is wear from some daily use and handling but overall impeccably clean for such a ridiculously rare gun. Unfortunately no original box or paperwork included.

In 1902, Conrad Hubert, a Russian/American immigrant, invented the first hand-held battery-operated flashlight. This invention was later patented in 1903. Shortly after, the clear application of a flashlight attached to a firearm started to be seen by multiple inventors/companies. One man beat the rest of them to the punch though, as in 1911, George A. Seely of San Francisco developed a solution for this problem by creating a firearm-mounted light that could withstand the recoil. The patent for his invention, "Night Sight For Firearms," was granted in 1912.
The device featured precise craftsmanship, including spring-and-rubber cushioning for the bulb. It was mounted on a Colt Police Positive .38 Spl. revolver, showcasing its ability to endure recoil. The light unit was securely fastened to the gun, with wires connected to a grip-frame battery. Adjustments could be made for point-of-impact accuracy, similar to a modern laser unit. Seely's patent also credited "J. Salsbury" for assistance in the design or funding.
Today, gun-mounted lights are common, but Seely's invention remains incredibly rare, with only a few known to exist. Notably, a Seely Night Sight from the collection of Clive Cussler was sold recently, highlighting its historical significance.

Shopping at Guns.com gives you the backing of a company that is committed to your satisfaction. And unlike our competitors, it extends beyond the buying process. We get the FFL from your store – others make you find it, copy it, and fax it. We have a generous return policy, and handle everything – you don’t have to go back to the store. And our Rangemasters are here to answer all your questions about our products or process. We're bringing a level of service to the online gun buying experience that is unheard of.
Many online gun sales actually take away from your local community. Instead of buying a gun that’s on your local store’s shelf, most retailers drop ship it from a warehouse in another state. At Guns.com, if an FFL is part of our network, we sell THEIR guns first whenever possible. That way, we’re helping small businesses in your community AND if they have it in stock, you can pick your gun up IMMEDIATELY – it’s how business should be done.
Most everything can be easily bought online these days. But for some reason, buying a gun online can be complicated. Most websites are poorly organized, don’t tell you a lot about what you’re buying, and leave you on your own to figure out what you want. Guns.com is built to be simple – easily organized products, useful descriptions from experts, and support to guide you to the right choice. Spend your time enjoying the gun you want, not getting frustrated with a complex website that makes gun buying hard.
