A Krieghoff Classic “Big Five” chambered with a .470 Nitro Express barrel set and an additional 9.3×74R barrel set is one of the most versatile modern double-rifle combinations available. It combines a true dangerous-game rifle with a highly practical medium-bore hunting rifle in the same action.
The Classic Big Five is a side-by-side double rifle built specifically for African dangerous game. It uses Krieghoff's distinctive manual cocking system rather than a conventional safety, allowing the rifle to be carried loaded but uncocked until the moment of the shot. The design was developed with input from professional hunters and safari guides.
Key features include:
Side-by-side barrels regulated at the factory
Double triggers
Reinforced steel action
Express sights with folding leaves
Manual tang-mounted cocking slide
Straight-comb "Big Five" stock with recoil pad
Weight roughly 9.5–10.5 lb (4.2–4.8 kg), depending on caliber and configuration
.470 Nitro Express Configuration
The .470 NE is the classic African stopping-rifle chambering.
Typical characteristics:
500-grain bullet
Approximately 2,100–2,150 fps
Around 5,000 ft-lb of energy
Intended for buffalo, elephant, hippo, and other dangerous game
In the Big Five configuration, the Krieghoff's weight helps moderate the substantial recoil, while the second instantly available shot is the chief advantage over a bolt-action rifle. The .470 NE remains one of the most respected dangerous-game cartridges ever developed.
9.3×74R Barrel Set
The interchangeable 9.3×74R barrels transform the rifle into a lighter-recoiling hunting arm suitable for:
Wild boar
Elk/moose
Red deer
Bear
Plains game
General European hunting
The 9.3×74R is often considered the classic European double-rifle cartridge. Users frequently report excellent regulation and practical accuracy to around 150 meters, making it far more versatile than the heavy Nitro Express chamberings.
The rifle comes in a custom case with a leather bag for the additional barrel. A Trijicon RMR sits atop the 9.3 barrel. This rifle took a Cape Buffalo and a Hippo in Africa.

Shopping at Guns.com gives you the backing of a company that is committed to your satisfaction. And unlike our competitors, it extends beyond the buying process. We get the FFL from your store – others make you find it, copy it, and fax it. We have a generous return policy, and handle everything – you don’t have to go back to the store. And our Rangemasters are here to answer all your questions about our products or process. We're bringing a level of service to the online gun buying experience that is unheard of.
Many online gun sales actually take away from your local community. Instead of buying a gun that’s on your local store’s shelf, most retailers drop ship it from a warehouse in another state. At Guns.com, if an FFL is part of our network, we sell THEIR guns first whenever possible. That way, we’re helping small businesses in your community AND if they have it in stock, you can pick your gun up IMMEDIATELY – it’s how business should be done.
Most everything can be easily bought online these days. But for some reason, buying a gun online can be complicated. Most websites are poorly organized, don’t tell you a lot about what you’re buying, and leave you on your own to figure out what you want. Guns.com is built to be simple – easily organized products, useful descriptions from experts, and support to guide you to the right choice. Spend your time enjoying the gun you want, not getting frustrated with a complex website that makes gun buying hard.
