Also known as the Model 1944 Carbine, the M44 was born towards the end of World War II when the Soviet Union recognized its military's need for a carbine-length M91/30, similar to the M38 but with a bayonet. The M44 was to be used primarily in urban combat. Built using a blueprint of the Model 1938 Carbine, the M44 utilizes a bolt action and is chambered in 7.62x54mm R.
