Weatherby Takes on .338 Lapua Magnum
It’s an exciting day for .338 Lapua Magnum. It has found a new home in Weatherby’s Mark V Accumark and Mark V Threat Response Rifle. You could say .338 Lapua Magnum was kind of a late bloomer because Finnish scientists began developing it in 1983 as a precision round to fire at distances of up to 1,000 meters. However, the US military also wanted it, but as an anti-personnel and anti-material round for up to 1,500 meters and in 1989 that’s what it became.
Here are a few facts on it.
It has a maximum effective range of 1,750 meters. Nice.
It has a velocity of 835 meters per second. Nice.
And, some say it can bust through five layers of body armor—I don’t know about that one, but it has been very successful for US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
It was never intended for hunting, just target and military use, but hunters tested it anyway and found it could kill any game—so it makes a great anti-animal round, too, but not a common one. Today there are only a handful of companies chambering their rifles with .338 Lapua Magnum (mostly precision and tactical rifles). That begs the question: How will the Mark V Accumark and TRR perform with the round?
Although the specs for the models aren’t out, so I’ll have to speculate a little bit and base my opinion off of what I do know. Most of the Mark V Accumark and all of the TRR sub-models are already chambered for magnum cartridges (some comparable to .338 Lapua Magnum). They are both relatively heavy rifles and have features that help battle recoil—it should be good to go, but we’ll see…
