Smith & Wesson Finally Makes a Model 1854 Lever Gun in .30-30
After flirting with several calibers over the past couple of years, Tennessee-based S&W has finally taken the plunge and chambered its lever-action rifle in probably the most popular lever-action hunting round.
When the Model 1854 was introduced in January 2024, it was only offered in .44 Magnum. Then, six months later, came a .45 Colt, followed by variants in .357 Magnum at SHOT Show '25. This April, the company went long-action with the .45-70 Government model, setting the stage for more traditional rifle calibers.
Now comes the long-awaited .30-30 Winchester variant of the Model 1854. The new rifle has a 6+1 capacity, a forged 416 stainless steel receiver, and a 20-inch 410 stainless steel barrel that includes a 5/8-24 thread pattern for suppressor use. Other features include a large loop lever, a flat trigger, a 5.75-inch Picatinny base for optics, an adjustable XS ghost ring rear sight, a gold bead front sight, and a forend with M-LOK accessory slots.
With a 20-inch barrel, the overall length of the Smith & Wesson Model 1854 in .30-30 Winchester is 37.8 inches. Note the gold bead front sight and 5/8-24TPI threaded muzzle with a thread protector. (Photos: S&W)
Note the black synthetic furniture. Weight is 7.5 pounds.
The forend offers three M-LOK compatible slots for the user’s preferred accessories and integrated mounts for the addition of a sling, while the receiver hosts a 5.75-inch top Pic rail for optics.
The MSRP on the new Smith & Wesson Model 1854 in .30-30 Winchester is $1,399. Comparatively, the Marlin (Ruger) Model 336 stainless big loop has an ask of $1,529.
