Giving the popular Mare's Leg series an overhaul to make it more utilitarian, Henry now has the new Bear's Leg series of cowboy action handguns.

Henry debuted its original Mare's Leg pistol in 2015 across five different calibers and three different finish options – all with wood furniture and 12-inch barrels. In the decade since, the platform has become popular and has tested well in our reviews.

Now, on the lead up to the NRA Annual Meetings in Texas this week, Henry has given its current and future fans something else to covet: the new Bear's Leg.

Offered at release in .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, .30-30 Winchester, and .45-70 Government, the Bear's Leg is packed with features including a 13.8-inch factory-threaded barrel, a polymer handguard with M-LOK slots and a Picatinny rail section, fiber optic front sights with an adjustable buckhorn rear, a large loop lever, and a side loading gate.

Overall length is 25.1 inches across the series, with a weight starting at 5.75 pounds. Magazine capacity is three rounds in .30-30 and .45-70, and four rounds in the short-action revolver calibers (.44 Mag/Spl and .357 Mag/.38 Special). (Photos: Henry)

In addition to its out-of-the-box capability, the Bear's Leg is also designed to offer a straightforward path to short-barreled rifle (SBR) conversion via a (currently) zeroed out Form 1.

"The result is a lever-action pistol platform equally suited for range use, truck carry, property duty, camp utility, and lawful customization where permitted," says Henry of the Bear's Leg.

"The Bear's Leg is our take on what a modern lever-action pistol can be, cranked up to 11," said Anthony Imperato, founder and CEO of Henry Repeating Arms. "It starts with a format people instantly recognize, then we give it some additional firepower, and then we add our popular X Model furniture for user configuration. Whether that means adding accessories, shooting suppressed, or using it as the foundation for something more specialized, the Bear's Leg is purpose-built for possibility."

The MSRP on the new Henry Bear's Leg series is $1,129.
