Originally designed as a target gun and manufactured after World War II as the K-22 Masterpiece, the Smith & Wesson Model 17 is a medium-sized K-frame revolver chambered in .22 LR. Though production of the Model 17 stopped in 1998, it was reintroduced in 2009 under the company's "Classic" line. The Model 17 is considered by many to be the best production target revolver ever made and is a popular collector piece and shooter.
