The Lefever Arms Co. side-by-side (SxS) double barrel shotgun is a highly influential vintage firearm, famous for pioneering the first commercially successful hammerless design in the United States.
Originally manufactured by Daniel "Uncle Dan" Lefever, they are celebrated for their superb craftsmanship, intricate engravings, and mechanical ingenuity. Because Lefever produced shotguns over several decades (from the late 1800s until 1947), the exact details depend heavily on the era and the specific model grade.
Graded Sidelock Shotguns (c. 1880s–1910s)Action & Hammers: The earliest models were the first American-made hammerless shotguns. Later sidelock variations feature automatic safeties and visible cocking indicators.
Barrels: Early grades were often equipped with highly prized Damascus steel barrels, while later models used Krupp or other high-quality fluid steels.
Engraving & Wood: Graded guns (ranging from G and F grades up to the highly ornate A, AA, and Optimus grades) featured gorgeous, hand-cut scrollwork and game-scene engravings (such as pointing dogs, woodcocks, and ducks). The stocks were made of premium, checkered Circassian or American walnut.
Unique Mechanics: Many higher-end Lefever models feature an adjustable knuckle (or hinge) that allows the shooter to tighten the barrels to the receiver if they shoot "off face" over time, an innovative feature for the period. The Lefever Nitro Special (c. 1921–1947)Following financial struggles and Daniel Lefever's death, the Lefever Arms branch was acquired by the Ithaca Gun Company.
Design: Ithaca transformed the Lefever name into a rugged, reliable, and accessible working-man's shotgun.Action & Finish: These are hammerless, boxlock-style shotguns featuring double triggers, shell extractors (rather than ejectors), and color case-hardened receivers.
Markings: The barrels are typically stamped "LEFEVER NITRO SPECIAL" on the right, and "LEFEVER ARMS CO. / ITHACA, N.Y." on the left.Gauges: Available in 12, 16, and 20 gauges, with a .410 bore variant introduced in 1926.

Shopping at Guns.com gives you the backing of a company that is committed to your satisfaction. And unlike our competitors, it extends beyond the buying process. We get the FFL from your store – others make you find it, copy it, and fax it. We have a generous return policy, and handle everything – you don’t have to go back to the store. And our Rangemasters are here to answer all your questions about our products or process. We're bringing a level of service to the online gun buying experience that is unheard of.
Many online gun sales actually take away from your local community. Instead of buying a gun that’s on your local store’s shelf, most retailers drop ship it from a warehouse in another state. At Guns.com, if an FFL is part of our network, we sell THEIR guns first whenever possible. That way, we’re helping small businesses in your community AND if they have it in stock, you can pick your gun up IMMEDIATELY – it’s how business should be done.
Most everything can be easily bought online these days. But for some reason, buying a gun online can be complicated. Most websites are poorly organized, don’t tell you a lot about what you’re buying, and leave you on your own to figure out what you want. Guns.com is built to be simple – easily organized products, useful descriptions from experts, and support to guide you to the right choice. Spend your time enjoying the gun you want, not getting frustrated with a complex website that makes gun buying hard.
