Off-duty officer fatally shoots robber at Carl’s Jr. (VIDEO)

A 19-year-old who planned to grab some quick cash via armed robbery at a Convina Carl’s Jr. was shot and killed by his intended target, who happened to be an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department reserve officer.

Authorities say the officer stopped in for lunch around 3:15 p.m. last Wednesday, July 6. The suspect approached the officer, brandished a weapon and announced a robbery. The officer, in turn, fearing for his own life, drew his weapon and shot the suspect multiple times.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and the handgun he used in the robbery attempt was recovered at the scene.

Covina police Sgt. Gregg Peterson said there was no indication the suspect and the officer knew one another and the robbery appeared to be random.

Other customers and employees were present at the time of the robbery, but there were not other injuries reported.
