Iowa lawmaker introduces ‘Suck it up, Buttercup’ bill (VIDEO)

After anti-Trump protesters shut down traffic on an Iowa highway, Rep. Bobby Kaufmann, (R) Wilton, introduced legislation dubbed the “Suck it up, Buttercup” bill.

“You’ve got a right to be a brat,” Kaufmann said. “You’ve got a right to protest, that’s constitutionally protected. But you do not have a right to throw a temper tantrum on I-80 and put my constituents’ lives in danger.”

The legislation would clarify state laws in reference to such activity, as well as fine colleges for spending tax dollars on “cry rooms” and other items of comfort that have been provided post-election.

“Using our tax dollars when tuition rates are skyrocketing is absolutely unacceptable to me,” Kaufmann noted.

But Iowa Rep. Phyllis Thede, (D) Bettendorf, called the legislation odd and said it’s a threat to free speech.

“I don’t want to go after somebody because they’re fearful, upset or angry,” she said. “That’s not what legislatures do.”

Thede believes they should be helping the protesters, not criminalizing their actions, but Kaufmann believes the bill will gain support.

“People say, ‘Suck it up, Buttercup, that’s kind of over the top,’ but so are the protests that are happening,” he concluded.
